fun friday
today was just a really fun day and i wanted to share it with y’all (yes, i said “y’all”—i’m getting ready for our vacation to texas next month).
first on the agenda was ECFE (early childhood and family education). once a week gus and i go to the K-8 school in breckenridge, mn, for some quality playtime. the classes are 1.5 hours long. the first third is open play in...

gus is an owl
i came across this fabulous tutorial for an owl costume last fall and have been wanting to make it ever since. yesterday was the day it finally happened. it was quite easy to sew together and i really love how it turned out. i used fabric scraps and some of jake’s old dress shirts for the feathers so it didn’t cost me anything!
i’m glad we got a few photos with the mask...

chocolate-chocolate-chip cookies with glazed...
it was a very blizzard-y day here today. it was cold and the wind was crazy. schools and many area businesses were closed. a perfect day to stay inside and bake. i love how these cookies turned out. so full of chocolate goodness. slightly crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside. i fear they’re not going to last too long around here.
here’s the recipe i adapted from...

gus: mama! watch it thomas. mama! watch it trains!
me: you can watch thomas when you're done eating breakfast.
gus: mama! all done!
would you be an outlaw for my love?
thirteen by big star. one of my favorite songs. i prefer the slower, stripped-down acoustic version of this song but this video is great, non? the colors, the hair, the lanky-ness. gotta love the ’70s.

hell's kitchen/the bad waitress
on our weekend trip to minneapolis in december we ate at two phenomenal restaurants—hell’s kitchen and the bad waitress. both had eclectic, vegetarian-friendly menus, fantastic service, and über-cool decor. i think one of the best aspects of traveling to big cities is trying out new places to eat. we rarely patronize the local dining establishments here in wahpeton because, quite frankly,...

i always enjoy my friend adaena’s blog, especially today’s entry. my sentiments exactly.
random blog musings
this got old real fast and is not that funny anymore. unsubscribed.
this was a laugh for about 2 days and then just got really sad, and really scary, and really depressing. unsubscribed.
this, however, is still rocking my world.
We had some chocolate Newman-O’s for dessert today. Gus likes to eat only the center, giving the cookie part away to me or Jake.
I want to go back to being weird. I like being weird. Weird’s all...

snowshoeing
What a beautiful day we had today. A beautiful weekend really. The sun was out, the wind was at a minimum, the temperature reached the mid-30s. Not too shabby for North Dakota in January. While most of the town was inside watching the Vikings game, we decided to take advantage of the wonderful weather and go snowshoeing at Chahinkapa Park.
We live close enough to walk there.

i've lost a little more faith in humanity
i’ve never been an “in your face politics” kinda girl. i don’t derive pleasure or satisfaction in heated arguements or debates. what can i say? i’m a libra. my zodiac sign is a scale and i do appreciate when things are balanced and in concert with each other. i have always tried to be respectful of other peoples’ views when they differ from mine. people have a...

let me hear you say this pudding is bananas!
B-A-N-A-N-A-S!
Seriously. This pudding is pretty friggin’ amazing. Scared of tofu? Never used it before? This is the recipe to try out (unless you don’t like B-A-N-A-N-A-S). It’s super-fast and easy, a healthy snack or dessert, and it’s both kid and grown-up friendly. What’s not to love?

appropriate for the new year
An excerpt from In Memoriam A.H.H. (CVI) by Tennyson (one of my favorite poets):
Ring out false pride in place and blood, The civic slander and the spite; Ring in the love of truth and right, Ring in the common love of good.
Ring out old shapes of foul disease; Ring out the narrowing lust of gold; Ring out the thousand wars of old, Ring in the thousand years of peace.
